Character Information
Character Name: Hitsugaya Tōshirō
Canon: Bleach
Canon Point: After his battle with Cang Du (chapter 554)
History: Link to the wiki. (The history section details Hitsugaya's past, and the plot section that follows covers his involvement in the story from the canon starting point.)
Personality:

A prodigy, and the youngest shinigami to achieve bankai and attain captaincy, Hitsugaya's achievements aren't entirely due to natural talent. In contrast to his young age, Hitsugaya works hard at his responsibilities, taking them and his duties very seriously. It is, in fact, likely due to his age that he makes such an effort to live up to his role as a captain, to the point where he even instructs his childhood friend, Hinamori, to refer to him as Hitsugaya-taichou, rather than Hitsugaya-kun. The way that he refers to his fellow captains is also telling of this, as he purposefully calls them exclusively by their last names (whereas other captains also refer to each other more casually, or with the attached -taichou title) in an effort to establish himself as their equal, at least in a professional regard. Though he does not boast about being a prodigy, he is proud of his accomplishments, the hard work that he put in to become a captain, and the abilities of himself and his zanpakutō, Hyōrinmaru.

This pride is not necessarily reflective of arrogance, as Hitsugaya has been shown willing to cooperate even with strangers in battle, asking them for favours and issuing apologies when they are due. As a result of being ostracized as a child, Hitsugaya is intensely dedicated to the few people that remained close to him: his grandmother, and Hinamori (as well as his lieutenant, Matsumoto, later on). Yet, he often finds himself "not worthy" of them—a sentiment that he voices after failing to defeat Aizen upon his betrayal of Soul Society, and therefore failing to take revenge for the trauma he inflicted upon Hinamori. This idea of not being strong enough does not manifest as self-pity however, but as increased determination to become stronger. Keenly feeling the burden of his responsibilities, both those put on him as a Captain of the Gotei 13, as well as the ones he takes on himself to protect those that he cares for, Hitsugaya is extremely hard on himself; constantly pushing himself to press forward and improve, wasting no time to lament his losses. He does not have the time to allow himself to become a burden to those around him, because that is how much he values the trust that is put in him, and the kindness that is shown to him. It is because of his past as an outcast that he not only wants to protect and repay the kindness shown to him by those that did not shun him, but also prove himself worthy, and receive acknowledgment for his abilities.

For the most part, Hitsugaya is exceedingly capable: completing the Shinō Academy (the academy that trains shinigami) curriculum, which is designed to take six years, in only a year. In addition to this, he does not let his natural intellect make him lazy, routinely completing the Division's paperwork in an orderly fashion, much more quickly and regularly than his former captain, and his current lieutenant. Not only does he (attempt to) maintain order within his own Division, but he also takes the initiative to extend it throughout the Gotei 13. Upon the announcement of Rukia's execution, not only does Hitsugaya notice that something is suspect about the order, but he takes it upon himself to investigate, and quell conflicts as suspicions and tensions begin to rise.

This investigation also displays the young captain's pragmatism. Hitsugaya does not allow himself to become distracted by the invasion of Ichigo and the others into the Gotei 13 complex, nor does he investigate Rukia's execution out of devotion to her, and allow his feelings to cloud his decisions. Instead, he is able to approach the issue with a level head, in order to maintain efficiency and attain results. In fact, the reason that he began his investigation alone—aside from suspecting Gin, and therefore not trusting all of his fellow captains—is because the Gotei 13 have a history of bickering over the details of plans, rather than taking action, and Hitsugaya is a boy that likes to see results.

Hitsugaya's lack of concern regarding Rukia's execution because it threatens her life also reveals the distance that he maintains between himself and others. This isn't entirely because Hitsugaya is particularly unfriendly, but rather because he devotes himself to improving himself, and his current duties, that he doesn't allow himself to become distracted by frivolous pursuits. It's not that he doesn't desire friends (and has, in the past shown a desire to make friends), but that he is able to, in most cases, rather callously weigh the importance of one thing against another. This is shown again when he opts to return to Soul Society to prepare for the battle against Aizen, rather than defy the Head Captain's orders and infiltrate Hueco Mundo to rescue Orihime, despite the kindness she showed him in allowing him and Matsumoto to stay in her home while they were assigned to the Human World. Hitsugaya returns, not only because fighting Aizen is more vital to the protection of Soul Society, but also because he needs understands the need to continue his training if he hopes to be a match for the former captain.

Aizen is also the cause of Hinamori's suffering, and that is something that he cannot forgive.

Despite his intellect and general level-headedness, Hitsugaya is still very young by Soul Society standards, and is prone to losing himself to his emotions. It doesn't happen very often, but when it does it is almost always related to the few people that he can consider his friends. Though coolheaded, Hitsugaya is still passionate; driven to become stronger, driven to protect those that he cares for, driven to prove himself. And sometimes this passion manifests as emotions that cloud his judgment. After lecturing Aizen about how there is no honour in wielding a blade out of hatred, Hitsugaya himself admits to being guilty of the same, and proclaims himself willing to throw away his title as captain, all that he's worked for, in order to cut Aizen down. This is because, ultimately, Hitsugaya's hard work and seriousness is because of his desire to be worthy of those that gift him with their friendship—Hinamori being a prime example of that. Therefore, whenever we see him fly into a rage, such as during this very battle with Aizen, it is generally a result of harm having come to her. These shows of thoughtless emotion, though rare, are in stark contrast to his more usual, sensible demeanour, and make him impulsive; desperate to press forward and improve, regardless of whether or not he has a plan, because deep down Hitsugaya cannot stand to allow himself to become a failure to those that took a risk by trusting him; will not stand to allow himself to become unworthy of them.

Abilities, Strengths and Weaknesses:
Abilities

Hitsugaya possesses a number of abilities, both those characteristic to shinigami in general, and those that are required for his rank as a captain.

Standard shinigami abilities are as follows:
Shunpo: Described as "flash stepping", or the ability to move faster than the eye can see.
Kidō: A collection of spells used to either bind, attack, or heal a target.
Spiritual Pressure: Most shinigami are taught to control the release of their spiritual energy to generate spiritual pressure. Hitsugaya is unique in that even before becoming a shinigami, he generated massive amounts of spiritual pressure, which ultimately led to his being ostracized because of the cold, unpleasant feeling it caused. As a captain, he is able to control his spiritual pressure, and disguise it completely when he wants to hide his presence.

Hitsugaya also has many abilities unique to himself, in combination with his ice-based zanpakutō, Hyōrinmaru.
Shikai: The first released form of his zanpakutō allows Hitsugaya to manipulate an ice-based dragon to attack his opponents. He is also capable of creating fairly substantial volumes of ice in this form to attack or defend himself, as well as manipulate the weather to lower the temperature.
Bankai: The second, more powerful, form merges the previously mentioned dragon with Hitsugaya's own body. While in bankai form, Hitsugaya is able to manipulate much larger and more complex bodies of ice, as well as draw on the moisture from the atmosphere to regenerate his ice indefinitely.

Strengths

Not only was Hitsugaya gifted with exceptional abilities from a young age, but he also possesses a mind that is able to put those abilities to use. Powers as a shinigami aside, Hitsugaya is shown to be fairly intelligent, capable of running his own division and leading missions on his own. He was also among the few to suspect foul play surrounding Rukia's execution, and correctly assumed Ichimaru Gin to be involved (though it was according to Aizen's plan). This intelligence is also evident among the battles that Hitsugaya has fought, as he is able to collaborate and come up with new tactics quickly on the battlefield.

Hitsugaya also possesses dedication and determination in spades. Despite his failures and shortcomings, the young captain never allows himself to be bogged down by self-pity, and instead plows forward as best as he can, continuously pushing himself to improve and become stronger. Even after losing something as precious as his bankai, which he had dedicated so much of his time to mastering after his loss to Aizen, Hitsugaya simply moves forward, training and inventing new ways to strengthen himself.

Weaknesses

Despite his rank and accomplishments, Hitsugaya is still fairly young by Soul Society standards, and is therefore prone to bouts of immaturity. He is rather quick to lose his temper, especially when it has to do with his height or with work not getting done. And though he does take his responsibilities as a captain seriously, part of the reason he is so effective in his work is so that he can take naps, believing that resting well will help him to grow. Ironically, it's his emphasis on work and little play, and his desire to become a "real" adult that reveals his immaturity.

Hitsugaya is also occasionally rash in his decision making, especially if he is emotional when doing so. It's not exactly that he overestimates his own abilities, but rather that he is so desperate to achieve that what he has dedicated himself to, that he loses sight of the reality of the situation in exchange for pushing himself forward, especially in battle. He is capable of cooperating with others, but when the situation becomes dire, his tactics often dissolve and he instead charges forward blindly on his own. It is therefore rather difficult to convince him otherwise once he has established his own convictions, which, outside of the battlefield, leads him to misunderstand others. He often deems himself as "unworthy" to comfort or help those that he cares about, which is a conclusion he draws on his own, ignoring the actual needs of the other person. As such, though he dedicates himself fiercely to those close to him, he does still have trouble truly understanding and empathizing with them.

Prose Log Sample:

He wonders if this counts as victory.

He wonders if it counts, as he thinks about Matsumoto (and he had ordered her to retreat, those had been his orders, and they hadn't been enough?) caught and crushed to the floor. And he doesn't even care that he had needed the help of Urahara, that he had needed to hollowify his bankai of all things, because beggars can't be choosers, and he'd been a beggar on that floor, at the mercy of those Quincy that had hunted down his lieutenant after he'd ordered her to retreat. It doesn't matter to him that he would've died on his own, because all he wants is to not have to see his home destroyed and he'll use whatever tricks he can in order to do it.

He doesn't mind the help, because he's used to working on a team, but the person who had been supporting him is—

"Damn it." The words are brief, gritted out because he hurts everywhere. It's not the pain that bothers him as much as it is his inability to walk properly because of it, he can't even muster up a single flash step to get him to where he'd seen that Quincy drop her body.

But he'll get there. He'll get there because he has to; because he's her captain and he's not fighting this war just so this city can look pretty again. Even though his bones ache, and his muscles are worn down, and his soul is so happy that it's got Hyōrinmaru back, complete. He'll get there.

Despite that, despite the urgency beating in his chest, forcing him forward, his head his heavy when he raises it to squint across the distance ahead of him. It's all empty and dead around him, and he can't even see her when he mutters a quiet, "Matsumoto..."

That's not his usual tone. It's not normal for him to call her name so softly, and really, even now he should be yelling at her for not listening to him and getting away like he'd told her to (even though, yeah he knows it's his fault, he hadn't counted on the second threat), but he just doesn't have enough voice in him. He can just imagine her high pitched drawl, saying something inane about how she'd have to cherish the singular moment where he's not yelling her name. It makes him snort, just slightly, even as his knees hit the ground and he knows that he's not going to make it.
